I studied on the 'Joint Course' between the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating in 2001. While at the RNCM I studied the piano with Helen Krizos and was finalist in the 'Bachspielen' and 'Recital Prize' competitions & Awarded the Peter Frankl Prize for Piano & the Hilda Collens Memorial Award.
My goal in composing is to write music which feels natural under the fingers and is also satisfying to play. Harmony, melody and the sense of a challenge are all aspects of music which are important to me.
I especially enjoy singing and love the sounds of the various modes used within the world of folk music. Because of this I've wanted to incorporate these sounds within my music. I also love being away from the rush of the city and getting out into the countryside; favourite places being up on the fells above the Duddon or the Esk in the Lake District or Derbyshire. And as well as composing music I'm also interested in breathing fresh air into old, well known folk melodies, arranging them for piano.
Hopefully my music will provide some light relief for students who are inbetween the more advanced grades, and also some easy listening, fresh music suitable for including in a concert.
I also compose songs for children and during lockdown I produced videos to help children carry on singing and learning scripture.
